STD Quiz – Answer Sheet

  1. You can get several sexually transmitted diseases at one time.
TRUE. It is possible to have many STDs at one time. In fact, having one STD may make it more likely that a person will acquire more STDs. For example, the open sores from herpes creates a place for HIV to be transmitted.
  2. Most sexually transmitted diseases can be treated and cured without medical attention.
FALSE. You can NOT cure yourself of an STD. Only a health practitioner can correctly diagnose and treat you.
  3. If the signs of a sexually transmitted disease go away, you are cured.
FALSE. The symptoms may go away, but your body is still infected. For example, syphilis is characterized by 3 stages. In the first stage, a painless sore called a chancre appears for about a week and then goes away.
  4. If you use birth control pills, you can get a sexually transmitted disease.
TRUE. Birth control pills do not protect you from STD infection. The only method of birth control that can help reduce the risk of STD infection is condoms.
  5. You always know when you have a sexually transmitted disease.
FALSE. Not all STDs have detectable symptoms. You may feel fine, have no unusual odors, look healthy and still be infected with an STD. For example, 75% of women and 50% of men have no symptoms when infected with chlamydia.
  6. People who get a sexually transmitted disease have a lot of sex partners.
FALSE. It only takes one time if a person is having sex with an infected partner, to get an STD.
  7. All types of sexually transmitted disease can be cured.
FALSE. Some STDs are viruses and therefore cannot be cured. There is no cure presently for Herpes, HIV/AIDS, or Genital Warts. Some STDs are treatable (to lesson pain and irritation with symptoms), but not curable.
  8. Parental consent is needed before you are treated for a sexually transmitted disease if you are under 18 years of age.
FALSE. You can receive confidential treatment for an STD if you are age 12 and over. Your parents do not have to be notified.
  9. You can have no symptoms, yet be infected with a sexually transmitted disease and be able to pass it on to someone else.
TRUE. A person does not always have to be experiencing symptoms to transmit an STD to a partner.
  10. You can wash away a sexually transmitted disease.
FALSE. No amount of washing can make an STD go away. STDs must be diagnosed and treated by a health care provider.
  11. All genital infections are a result of sexual contact.
FALSE. Some infections occur naturally, without sexual contact. Some types of vaginal infections (e.g. yeast infections) are not sexually transmitted and are due to other causes.
  12. You can get a sexually transmitted disease more than once.
TRUE. Experiencing one infection with an STD does NOT mean that you can never be infected again. A person can be reinfected many times with the same STD. This is especially true if a person does not get treated for the STD and thus keeps reinfecting his/her partner with the same STD.
  13. More than 15 million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases are diagnosed each year in the U.S.
    TRUE. (CDC.www.cdc.gov/nchstp/dstd/Stats_Trends/STD_Trends.pdf)
  14. One in ten people in the United States have a sexually transmitted disease.
FALSE. One in FIVE people in the United States have a sexually transmitted disease.
